2019 is a conceptual EP by Lucy Dacus, released as a series of singles throughout the year to coincide with various holidays (Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Independence Day, etc.). While primarily a covers project, it includes two significant originals: 'Fool's Gold' and 'My Mother & I'. The EP showcases Dacus's versatility as an arranger, moving from the delicate, piano-led 'La vie en rose' to a heavy, slow-burning rendition of Phil Collins' 'In the Air Tonight'. Positioned between her breakout 'Historian' and the 2021 masterpiece 'Home Video', this collection serves as a bridge, refining her signature 'slow-build' song structure. Critics praised the EP for its thematic cohesion despite its disparate source material, noting that Dacus's literary approach to lyricism extends even to her choice of covers, which she inhabits with a distinct, often melancholic, perspective.
