A Broken Frame

Released in 1982, A Broken Frame is the pivotal second studio album by Depeche Mode and the first to feature Martin Gore as the sole songwriter following Vince Clarke's departure. Recorded at Blackwing Studios, the album captures a band in a state of flux, experimenting with primitive sampling and more complex lyrical themes. While often dismissed by Gore himself as a 'worst' effort, the album is historically significant for establishing the melancholic, minor-key template that would define the band's career. Sonically, it moves away from the upbeat 'disco' feel of their debut toward a more atmospheric, 'pastoral' synth-pop sound. It features Dave Gahan's vocals in a more subdued, emotive register, complemented by the band's early forays into found-sound percussion on tracks like 'Monument'.
