A Strange Arrangement

Released in 2009 on the legendary hip-hop label Stones Throw, A Strange Arrangement marked a significant pivot for both the label and Andrew Cohen (Mayer Hawthorne). Originally a DJ and hip-hop producer (DJ Haircut), Cohen recorded these tracks as a private exercise in soul songwriting, playing nearly every instrument himself. When Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf heard the demos, he initially mistook them for rare 1960s reissues. The album is a masterclass in 'retro-soul,' but unlike the brassy, powerhouse revivalism of Sharon Jones or Amy Winehouse, Hawthorne focused on the smoother, pop-oriented 'Northern Soul' and Motown sounds. Critics, including those at the BBC, praised its authenticity and Cohen's ability to inhabit the genre's tropes with genuine emotion rather than irony. It remains a cornerstone of the 21st-century soul revival, bridging the gap between crate-digging hip-hop culture and classic American songwriting.
