Alligator Woman

Released in 1982, Alligator Woman marks a critical evolution in Cameo's history. Following a reduction in band membership from eleven to five, leader Larry Blackmon steered the group toward a more streamlined, synth-heavy sound. This transition was pivotal, moving away from the horn-heavy arrangements of their earlier work toward the 'Cameo sound' that would dominate the mid-80s. The album successfully integrated elements of New Wave and Rock into their funk foundation, a move reflected in the sharp guitar work of Charlie Singleton and the prominent use of synthesizers. The record was certified Gold, proving that their leaner lineup was commercially viable. Notably, the cover features Vanity, further linking the album to the burgeoning aesthetic of the 80s R&B elite.
