Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

Released in 2004 after a seven-year hiatus following the world-conquering 'The Fat of the Land', 'Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned' represents a radical shift in The Prodigy's internal dynamics. Liam Howlett recorded the album almost entirely as a solo project using Propellerhead Reason on a Macintosh laptop, marking the only time in the group's history where Keith Flint and Maxim Reality provided no official contributions. This 'laptop-rock' approach resulted in a more clinical, digital sound compared to the analog-heavy grit of their 90s work. The album is notable for its heavy reliance on guest vocalists, including Juliette Lewis, Princess Superstar, Twista, and the Gallagher brothers, which helped fill the void left by the absent band members. Despite reaching number one in the UK, it received a polarized critical reception and led to the band being dropped by XL Recordings. It remains a fascinating, if divisive, document of Howlett's technical obsession and a departure from the 'punk-rave' aesthetic that defined their global fame.
