Released in 2021, American Quilt represents a significant pivot for Paula Cole, moving away from her signature art-pop and alternative rock origins toward a scholarly yet soulful exploration of American roots music. Recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, the album was the result of extensive research into folk traditions, Tin Pan Alley standards, and the cultural history of American quilting as a metaphor for the country's diverse musical heritage. While her previous release focused on jazz, this record broadens the scope to include blues, spirituals, and Americana.
