Analog Worms Attack

Released in 1999 on F Communications, Analog Worms Attack is the debut full-length from Quentin Dupieux, better known as Mr. Oizo. While Dupieux would later become a celebrated surrealist filmmaker and a pioneer of the 'Ed Banger' distorted electro sound, this debut is a much more grounded, analog affair. The record is famously centered around the Korg MS-20 synthesizer, which provides the signature 'wormy' bass textures that define the album's title and sonic identity. Unlike his later work, which utilized digital 'chopping' techniques, this album is a tribute to the limitations and character of hardware. It bridges the gap between the abstract hip-hop of Mo' Wax and the burgeoning French techno scene. The inclusion of the global hit 'Flat Beat' as a closing track cemented the album's legacy, though the rest of the record is significantly more experimental and atmospheric. It features prominent turntable work from Feadz, adding a gritty, rhythmic layer to the minimalist compositions.
