Animal Magic

Released in 2000, Animal Magic is the debut studio album by Simon Green, performing as Bonobo. Originally appearing on the Tru Thoughts label before being picked up by Ninja Tune, the record served as a blueprint for the downtempo and nu jazz movements of the early 2000s. Unlike the more orchestral and expansive works that would follow later in his career (such as Black Sands), Animal Magic is a more intimate, sample-heavy affair, heavily influenced by the 'cut-and-paste' aesthetic of hip-hop but applied to a jazz and world-music palette. The album is notable for its use of live instrumentation - specifically Green’s own bass and guitar work - layered seamlessly with vinyl samples. Tracks like 'Terrapin' and 'Kota' became foundational texts for the 'chillout' genre, praised by critics for their organic warmth and sophisticated arrangements. It remains a high-water mark for the Brighton electronic scene and established Bonobo as a master of atmospheric, beat-driven composition.
