Anvil Vapre

Released in 1995 as a companion to their seminal full-length Tri Repetae, Anvil Vapre represents Autechre at their most industrial and rhythmically dense. The EP consists of four long-form tracks that utilize the same sound palette as Tri Repetae - heavy on metallic percussion, digital grit, and complex, algorithmic sequencing. While the duo's earlier work leaned into more melodic ambient techno, this era saw them embracing a harsher, more abstract aesthetic. The lead track, 'Second Bad Vilbel,' became one of their most recognizable pieces, aided by a disturbing, high-contrast music video directed by Chris Cunningham. The EP's title and track names reference the duo's home geography in Northern England, filtered through their signature cryptic naming conventions. Historically, it serves as the bridge between their 'accessible' IDM phase and the increasingly fragmented, generative experiments of their later career. It remains a fan favorite for its uncompromising energy and flawless production.
