Arbour Zena

Recorded in October 1975 and released in 1976, Arbour Zena represents a pivotal moment in Keith Jarrett's discography where his interests in formal composition and jazz improvisation fully merged. Featuring his 'Belonging' collaborator Jan Garbarek and his American Quartet bassist Charlie Haden, the album is structured around three long-form pieces dedicated to specific influences (the unknown, Pablo Casals, and his teachers). The inclusion of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra elevates the work beyond a standard jazz trio date, placing it firmly in the 'Third Stream' or chamber jazz tradition. While some critics at the time found the nearly 28-minute 'Mirrors' to be overly static, the album has since been recognized as a foundational text for the atmospheric, 'northern' jazz aesthetic that ECM Records became famous for.
