Arise

Released in 1991, Arise is widely considered the magnum opus of Sepultura's thrash era. Recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida, the album benefited from the peak of death metal production technology, resulting in a sound that was significantly more sophisticated than its predecessor, Beneath the Remains. While it maintains the high-velocity attack of thrash, Arise is notable for introducing experimental elements that would later define the band's career. This includes the subtle integration of industrial soundscapes and the first meaningful use of non-traditional percussion, particularly on tracks like 'Altered State'. The album was a massive commercial success for Roadrunner Records, achieving platinum status and establishing Sepultura as the first truly global metal superstars from a non-Western country. Critics at the time praised the band's maturing songwriting, noting that the inclusion of mid-tempo 'grooves' added a new dimension of heaviness that pure speed could not achieve.
