Awake?

Released in 2009 on Ferret Records, Awake? is Zao's ninth studio album and marks a significant production shift for the band. After the raw, Steve Albini-engineered analog grit of their previous effort, the band moved to a Pro Tools-based workflow, resulting in a tighter, more layered sonic profile. The recording process was split geographically, with drums tracked in California under the supervision of Tim Lambesis and Daniel Castleman, while guitars and vocals were handled by Dave Hidek in Pennsylvania. This separation contributed to the album's unique 'digital sludge' feel. The release was notable for its limited physical run of 8,000 numbered copies featuring six interchangeable covers, emphasizing the album's conceptual and artistic nature. Musically, it bridges the gap between traditional metalcore and the burgeoning post-metal scene, featuring a re-recording of 'Romance of the Southern Spirit' and the sprawling two-part closer 'Quiet Passenger'.
