Released in early 2011 as a free digital mixtape presented by XXL, Bad Season represents a unique experiment in Tech N9ne's discography. Orchestrated by DJ Whoo Kid and DJ Scream, the project was built on a 'blind' production premise: Tech was given a collection of beats without knowing the producers, which were later revealed to include heavyweights like Dr. Dre, Travis Barker, and Cookin' Soul. This departure from his usual in-house production team at Strange Music resulted in a more traditional, albeit aggressive, hip-hop sound. The project is notable for the track 'Hard Liquor,' a Dr. Dre-produced leftover from The Game's 'Doctor's Advocate' sessions, remixed here by Travis Barker. Critical reception highlighted the mixtape's ability to maintain Tech's signature 'chopper' style while adapting to the mixtape circuit's faster, more immediate delivery requirements.
