Bande à part

Released in 2006, Bande à part is the second studio album by the French collective Nouvelle Vague, led by producers Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux. Building on the success of their debut, this record further refines their signature concept: covering post-punk and new wave classics in the style of 1960s bossa nova and 1950s lounge. The album features a rotating cast of female vocalists, including Mélanie Pain and Marina Céleste, whose delivery emphasizes the 'breathy' French aesthetic. Musically, the album is defined by its minimalist, acoustic arrangements, often relying on little more than a nylon-string guitar and light percussion. By recontextualizing songs by New Order, Blondie, and Bauhaus, Nouvelle Vague highlights the melodic strength of the original compositions while completely subverting their emotional tone. The album was a critical and commercial success, solidifying the band's role as the premier architects of sophisticated 'chillout' music in the mid-2000s.
