Barnstorm

Released in 1972, Barnstorm marks Joe Walsh's first major artistic statement after leaving the James Gang. Recorded with bassist Kenny Passarelli and drummer Joe Vitale, the album represents a radical departure from the power-trio hard rock that made Walsh famous. Instead, Walsh leaned into his fascination with the 'open-ended' production styles of The Who and the vocal sophistication of CSN. The record is notable for its early use of the ARP Odyssey synthesizer, which Walsh used to create atmospheric textures rather than lead lines. Sonically, the album is defined by the use of the Leslie 122 speaker cabinet to process guitar signals, resulting in a unique, shimmering modulation. While 'Turn to Stone' provides the album's only true hard rock moment, the rest of the tracklist is a masterclass in folk-rock and Americana, blending acoustic fingerpicking with sophisticated studio layering.
