Bend Sinister

A murky, tape-saturated descent into urban gloom. Jagged basslines and cryptic rants filtered through the hiss of a handheld cassette recorder.

Bend Sinister is the sound of a band intentionally sabotaging their own professional polish. It is a thick, atmospheric record that feels like it was dragged through a Manchester gutter before being committed to tape. While producer John Leckie attempted to bring a psychedelic sheen to the sessions, Mark E. Smith countered with a stubborn insistence on lo-fi grit, even mastering tracks from a personal Walkman cassette. The result is a unique murkiness that sets it apart from the sharper, more aggressive Fall records of the early 80s.

Moments Worth Listening For
The oppressive, repetitive bass groove on R.O.D. that feels like a mechanical heartbeat.
The sudden, jarring transition from studio clarity to hissy cassette fidelity on the opening track.
The haunting, almost psychedelic synth wash that closes out Shoulder Pads.
