Beyond Magnetic

Beyond Magnetic is a four-track EP consisting of previously unreleased material from the 2008 Death Magnetic sessions. Released in late 2011 to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary, the EP was a strategic pivot back to the band's thrash roots following the polarizing reception of their collaboration with Lou Reed. Sonically, the EP is notable for having a more dynamic and less compressed mix than the original Death Magnetic album, which was famously embroiled in controversy over its mastering. The tracks are characterized by their length and complexity, featuring multiple tempo changes and extended solo sections from Kirk Hammett. 'Rebel of Babylon' is often cited as a standout for its homage to the band's 80s speed-metal era. Despite being 'outtakes', the production quality is high-tier, capturing a raw energy that many fans felt was missing from the more polished studio albums of the 2000s.
