Big Calm

Released in 1998, Big Calm saw Morcheeba pivoting from the darker, more claustrophobic trip-hop of their debut, Who Can You Trust?, toward a more expansive and eclectic sound. The Godfrey brothers (Paul and Ross) integrated elements of country-blues, 70s folk, and dub reggae into their electronic foundation, creating a template that would define the 'chill-out' genre for years. Recorded during a period of rising commercial success, the album features the iconic vocals of Skye Edwards, whose performance on tracks like 'The Sea' and 'Blindfold' became synonymous with the group's identity. The album is notable for its use of live instrumentation, particularly Ross Godfrey's blues-inflected guitar work, which distinguishes it from the sample-heavy aesthetics of peers like Portishead or Massive Attack. It remains their most critically and commercially successful work, peaking in the UK Top 20 and cementing their status as leaders of the second wave of trip-hop.
