Blood Ballet

Released in 2014, Blood Ballet is the second independent album by Maggie Rogers, following 2012's The Echo. Recorded while she was a student at NYU's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, the album serves as a bridge between her traditional folk upbringing in Maryland and the more experimental textures she would later adopt. Unlike her breakout major-label work, Blood Ballet is almost entirely acoustic, leaning heavily on banjo, acoustic guitar, and subtle string arrangements. The songwriting is deeply influenced by her time spent in the outdoors and her studies in English literature, resulting in lyrics that are both pastoral and introspective. While it lacks the electronic 'field recording' percussion that would later define her sound, the album demonstrates her innate ability to use natural space as an instrument. It remains a fan favorite for its raw emotional honesty and its snapshot of a pre-fame artist honing her craft in the folk tradition.
