Borderline Hymns

Borderline Hymns is the debut EP from Swedish avant-garde metal outfit Diablo Swing Orchestra, released in 2003. While the band would later become synonymous with a high-energy fusion of swing and metal, this early release leans more heavily into symphonic metal and gothic art rock. The core of their sound is already present: Annlouice Lögdlund’s soaring operatic soprano and the prominent use of the cello as a primary melodic driver. However, the tempo is generally slower and the mood significantly darker than their subsequent full-length albums. The EP serves as a critical bridge between the symphonic metal trends of the early 2000s and the more eclectic, genre-bending style the band would eventually perfect. It remains a fan favorite for its unique, somber atmosphere and its role as the foundational document of the DSO sound.
