Boys for Pele

Released in 1996, Boys for Pele represents Tori Amos's most significant artistic pivot. Following the massive success of Under the Pink, Amos took full control as sole producer, moving the recording process to a church in Delgany, Ireland, and a house in Louisiana. The album is famous for its rejection of standard pop structures in favor of baroque instrumentation, most notably the harpsichord, which Amos played with a percussive, almost violent intensity. Lyrically, the album is a dense thicket of mythological references, religious deconstruction, and the fallout of her breakup with producer Eric Rosse. Despite its 70-minute runtime and 'impenetrable' lyrics, it debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, proving the massive cultural reach of the 90s alternative movement. It is a landmark of the 'confessional' era that paradoxically used abstraction to hide its most painful truths.
