Bullhead

Released in 1991 on Boner Records, Bullhead represents a pivotal moment in the Melvins' discography and the evolution of heavy music. Following their early experimental EPs and the raw 'Ozma', Bullhead saw the band - Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover, and Lorax - stretching their compositions into longer, more atmospheric territories. The opening track 'Boris' is so influential it gave the Japanese experimental band Boris their name. Sonically, the album is a masterclass in 'sludge', a genre the Melvins essentially pioneered by blending the slow-motion dread of Black Sabbath with the abrasive attitude of Black Flag. Produced by Jonathan Burnside, the record features a dry, punchy sound that highlights Crover’s legendary drumming. It served as a critical bridge between the 80s underground and the 90s alternative boom, famously influencing Kurt Cobain and the broader Pacific Northwest scene. While often grouped with grunge, Bullhead is far more experimental and 'metallic' than its contemporaries, maintaining a cult status for its uncompromising heaviness.
