Released in late 1989, ...But Seriously represents Phil Collins' transition from the synth-heavy dominance of No Jacket Required toward a more organic, 'serious' musical identity. Recorded primarily at The Farm in Surrey, the album is notable for Collins' decision to abandon the drum machines that defined his 80s sound in favor of live drum kits, providing a more dynamic and less rigid rhythmic foundation.
