Butterfly 3000

Butterfly 3000 marks the eighteenth studio outing for King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and represents one of their most significant stylistic departures. Recorded primarily during COVID-19 lockdowns, the album began as a series of instrumental experiments on modular synthesizers, originally intended as interludes for their live film 'Chunky Shrapnel'. The project evolved into a full-length exploration of 'dream pop' and 'indietronica', characterized by its reliance on arpeggiated sequences and major-key melodies. Lyrically, the album is deeply influenced by frontman Stu Mackenzie's transition into fatherhood, with tracks like 'Butterfly 3000' and 'Yours' reflecting themes of growth, protection, and rebirth. Despite the electronic foundation, the band maintains their progressive rock sensibilities through complex polyrhythms and seamless track transitions, creating a continuous 44-minute suite. It was the first release on their independent KGLW label, signaling a new era of creative autonomy.
