Released in 1987, Canciones de mi padre represented a massive commercial risk for Linda Ronstadt, who was then known as the 'Queen of Rock.' Defying label expectations, she pivoted to a full-length exploration of her Mexican heritage, specifically the mariachi music of her childhood in Tucson, Arizona. Produced by Peter Asher and featuring the legendary Rubén Fuentes as musical director, the album utilized three of the world's finest mariachi ensembles: Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, Mariachi Los Camperos, and Mariachi Sol de Mexico. The project was inspired by a 1946 booklet of the same name written by her aunt, Luisa Espinel. Despite being recorded entirely in Spanish, it became a cultural phenomenon, selling over 10 million copies worldwide and becoming the best-selling non-English language album in U.S. history. It won the Grammy for Best Mexican-American Performance and sparked a significant revival of interest in mariachi music among Mexican-American youth and mainstream audiences alike.
