Released in 1987, Children of God is the definitive turning point in the Swans discography. After years of defining the limits of sonic brutality in the New York No Wave scene, Michael Gira moved the band to Cornwall, England, to record at Sawmills Studios. This change in environment facilitated a dramatic shift toward acoustic instrumentation, woodwinds, and more conventional song structures, though the band's core intensity remained intact. The album is notable for being the first to fully integrate Jarboe as a primary vocal foil to Gira, establishing a 'beauty and the beast' dynamic that would define their middle period.
