Comfort & Joy

Released as a surprise EP in late 2020, Comfort & Joy represents Tinashe's first foray into holiday music as an independent artist. Recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, the project reflects the isolation and intimacy of that era, eschewing big-budget studio arrangements for a 'bedroom R&B' aesthetic. The tracklist consists of one intro and six covers of traditional carols and holiday standards. Sonically, the album aligns with the 'dark R&B' movement, utilizing heavy reverb, minimalist drum programming, and dense vocal layering. Critics noted the project's ability to transform well-worn melodies into something fresh and atmospheric, often comparing the sound to her earlier mixtape work.
