Released in 1990, Compositions represents the creative zenith of Anita Baker's collaboration with producer Michael J. Powell. Following the massive success of Rapture and Giving You the Best That I Got, Baker sought a more organic, jazz-oriented sound, insisting on recording with a live rhythm section in the studio rather than relying on the programmed arrangements prevalent in R&B at the time. This decision resulted in a record with exceptional dynamic range and a 'live' feel that distinguishes it from its contemporaries. The album features world-class session musicians including Nathan East, Greg Phillinganes, and Steve Ferrone, whose interplay gives the tracks a sophisticated jazz-funk undertone. Critically, the album was a triumph, earning Baker her third consecutive platinum certification and a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
