Confield

Released in 2001, Confield marks a radical turning point in Autechre's discography, moving away from the identifiable 'IDM' tropes of their 90s output toward a more generative, software-based approach. Utilizing the Max/MSP programming environment, Sean Booth and Rob Brown created systems that allowed for complex, non-linear rhythmic structures. While critics at the time were divided - some hailing it as a masterpiece of experimentalism and others finding it impenetrable - it has since been recognized as one of the most influential electronic albums of the 21st century. Pitchfork famously awarded it an 8.8, noting its 'thought-provoking' nature. The album's aesthetic is defined by its lack of traditional melody and its focus on texture, timbre, and the manipulation of time.
