Constant Hitmaker

Constant Hitmaker is the debut studio album by Kurt Vile, originally released in 2008 on Gulcher Records before being widely distributed by Woodsist. It serves as the foundational document of Vile's 'slacker-shaman' persona, bridging the gap between his early home-recorded CDRs and his later high-fidelity success with Matador Records. The album was primarily recorded at home, resulting in a distinct lo-fi aesthetic characterized by tape hiss, primitive drum machine loops, and dense layers of reverb-soaked guitars. Unlike his later work which leans into Americana and folk-rock, this album is heavily indebted to psychedelic pop and the 'New Weird America' scene of the mid-2000s. Critics often highlight its 'outsider' quality, comparing Vile's approach to the idiosyncratic songwriting of Lou Reed or John Fahey.
