Released in 2018, 'Covers, Vol. 1: Lady Covers' is a curated collection of reinterpretations by Ben Cooper (Radical Face). The project focuses exclusively on songs originally performed or written by women, spanning from Dolly Parton's country-classic 'Jolene' to Lana Del Rey's 'Video Games' and Cyndi Lauper's 'The Goonies "R" Good Enough'. Sonically, the EP is a continuation of the 'The Family Tree' aesthetic, utilizing Cooper's home-studio techniques of heavy vocal layering and organic, non-traditional percussion. Unlike his narrative-heavy original albums, this EP allows Cooper to showcase his skill as an arranger, bending disparate genres into a cohesive, chamber-folk soundscape. The reception among his core fanbase highlighted the emotional weight he brought to 'Nothing Compares 2 U' and the surprising vulnerability found in his version of 'Memory' from the musical Cats. It stands as a testament to his ability to maintain a distinct sonic identity regardless of the source material.
