Creatures

Released in 1996 on the seminal Ninja Tune label, Creatures is a pivotal early work in Amon Tobin's discography, released shortly after his debut under the Cujo moniker. This EP captures Tobin at a moment of transition, refining the 'jazz-step' sound that would define his breakthrough album, Bricolage. The title track is a definitive example of his early style: taking a double bass riff and surrounding it with increasingly complex, skittering percussion that hints at his future explorations in jungle and drum and bass. Critically, the EP was praised for its sophisticated use of sampling, moving beyond the simple loops of his peers into a more 'cinematic' territory.
