Crosses EP

Released in 2003, the Crosses EP served as a crucial precursor to José González's breakthrough debut album, Veneer. Recorded with extreme minimalism, the EP features only González, his nylon-string guitar, and his signature hushed, double-tracked vocals. This specific release established his unique sonic identity: a blend of classical guitar technique and indie-folk sensibilities that eschews the typical 'strumming' tropes of the genre in favor of complex, percussive fingerstyle arrangements. The track 'Storm' highlights his ability to use the guitar as both a melodic and rhythmic engine, with the body of the instrument providing a subtle, heartbeat-like pulse. Critically, this EP is viewed as the moment González perfected his 'private world' aesthetic, moving away from his hardcore punk roots in the band Renascence toward a sound that would eventually define the quiet-is-the-new-loud movement of the early 2000s.
