Crusader

Released in January 1984, Crusader marked a significant pivot for Saxon, moving away from the raw, high-speed energy of 'Wheels of Steel' toward a more commercial, Americanized hard rock sound. Produced by Kevin Beamish at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, the album features a slicker sonic profile characterized by gated reverb on the drums and more prominent vocal harmonies. The title track remains one of the band's most enduring epics, utilizing a dramatic spoken-word intro and a heavy, slow-burning riff to depict the Third Crusade. Despite its polish, the album includes a blistering cover of Sweet's 'Set Me Free,' proving the band hadn't lost their ability to play at breakneck speeds. While some purists at the time criticized the shift toward 'radio-friendly' metal, Crusader became a fan favorite and remains a staple of their live sets, representing the peak of their mid-80s international ambition.
