Cubist Reggae

Released in 2011 on Planet Mu, Cubist Reggae represents a significant stylistic pivot for Venetian Snares (Aaron Funk). While Funk is primarily celebrated as the pioneer of breakcore, this EP sees him applying his rigorous rhythmic complexity to the foundations of dub and reggae. The four tracks utilize the space and echo characteristic of dub but subject them to the surgical glitch processing and odd time signatures (often 7/4 or 5/4) that define Funk's work. Unlike his more aggressive albums like 'Rossz Csillag Alatt Született', this release prioritizes atmosphere and spatial manipulation over sheer speed. It was received by critics as a successful experiment in 'raggacore' deconstruction, proving Funk's versatility outside of high-velocity breakbeats. The production is notable for its clean, surgical use of sub-bass and its intricate, multi-layered delay chains.
