Cult Following

Cult Following is the second studio album by Laurel Sprengelmeyer, performing as Little Scream. Released in 2016 on Merge Records, the album represents a significant sonic evolution from her 2011 debut, The Golden Record. While her earlier work was rooted in sparse, painterly indie folk, Cult Following is a maximalist art-pop project. The recording process was highly collaborative, featuring a 'who's who' of the indie rock elite, including members of Arcade Fire, The National, and TV on the Radio. Richard Reed Parry served as a primary creative partner, helping to shape the album's dense, multi-layered arrangements. The inclusion of legendary cult singer Mary Margaret O'Hara adds a layer of avant-garde prestige to the closing tracks. Thematically, the album explores devotion, identity, and the 'cults' we form in our personal and spiritual lives, set against a backdrop of shimmering synths, disco beats, and intricate string sections.
