Curb

Released in 1996, Curb is Nickelback's debut full-length, representing their most authentic connection to the grunge movement. Recorded at Turtle Recording Studios in British Columbia, the album showcases a band heavily influenced by the 'Big Four' of Seattle, particularly the darker, more metallic edges of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. The lyrical centerpiece, the title track 'Curb', is a harrowing narrative based on a real-life fatal car accident involving a friend of Chad Kroeger, which explains the original cover art's depiction of a crash site. Sonically, the album is dominated by a prominent, distorted bass guitar and a vocal performance that favors raw intensity over melodic precision. While critics at the time and in retrospect (such as Rolling Stone) dismissed it as derivative of the era's trends, the album remains a cult favorite among fans for its heavy, unpolished energy. It also contains the original version of 'Just Four', which would later be polished into the hit 'Just For' on their 2001 breakthrough Silver Side Up.
