Released in 1997, Curtains is often cited as the definitive Tindersticks statement and a cornerstone of the chamber pop genre. Following their acclaimed self-titled debut and its equally ambitious successor, this third album saw the band refining their 'noir' aesthetic to a sharp, cinematic point. Recorded with an expanded palette of instrumentation, including lush string sections and brass, the album moves away from the more jagged edges of their early work toward a smoother, more immersive sound. The centerpiece, 'Ballad of Tindersticks,' serves as a meta-narrative on the band's own touring life and internal dynamics, clocking in at over seven minutes of spoken-word reflection. Critics at the time, including AllMusic, praised the album for its sophisticated songwriting and Staples' unique vocal delivery, which had by then become one of the most recognizable voices in British independent music.
