Daybreaker

Released in 2002, Daybreaker represents the peak of Beth Orton's synthesis of folk and electronic music. Following the success of Central Reservation, Orton collaborated with a diverse array of musicians including Ryan Adams, Emmylou Harris, and members of The Chemical Brothers to create a sound that is more expansive and polished than her earlier work. The recording process was famously sprawling, with Orton tracking 25 songs in two weeks before spending a year refining the final ten. This meticulousness shows in the production, which balances dry, intimate vocals with lush orchestral arrangements and subtle electronic programming. While some contemporary critics found the pacing too slow, the album has aged as a landmark of the 'folktronica' genre, earning Orton a BRIT Award nomination. It stands as her most sonically ambitious record, bridging the gap between the Laurel Canyon tradition and the UK's electronic underground.
