Dedication

Recorded in Tokyo in a single day during a 1974 tour, Dedication is a unique entry in Herbie Hancock's discography, originally released only in Japan. The album is structurally divided: Side A features solo acoustic piano performances of 'Maiden Voyage' and 'Dolphin Dance,' while Side B features Hancock on electric keyboards and synthesizers, most notably the ARP 2600 and a Maestro Rhythm King drum machine. The track 'Nobu' is particularly significant to music historians, as its rigid, sequenced electronic pulse is often cited as a foundational precursor to techno and electro. While Hancock was concurrently leading the funk-heavy Headhunters, this solo outing reveals a more experimental, minimalist side of his artistry. It remained a rare import for decades, finally receiving a wider release in the 2010s, which solidified its reputation as a visionary bridge between jazz improvisation and electronic music production.
