Defy

Released in early 2018, Defy represents a pivotal chapter for Of Mice & Men as they transitioned into a four-piece following the exit of Austin Carlile. Bassist Aaron Pauley stepped into the lead vocal role, bringing a more melodic and stable vocal presence that allowed the band to lean further into alternative metal and hard rock territories. Produced by Howard Benson, the album features a highly polished, radio-friendly sheen that emphasizes clarity and punch over raw, chaotic energy. This shift polarized some long-time metalcore purists but successfully expanded the band's reach into the mainstream rock circuit. The inclusion of a cover of Pink Floyd's 'Money' signaled their interest in classic rock structures reimagined through a modern metal lens.
