Desire

Released in 1976, Desire stands as one of Bob Dylan's most commercially successful and sonically distinct works. Following the intimate 'Blood on the Tracks,' Dylan pivoted toward a more expansive, collaborative sound, largely co-writing the lyrics with theater director Jacques Levy. This partnership resulted in a series of 'story-songs' characterized by vivid, cinematic imagery and narrative arcs. The album is inextricably linked to the Rolling Thunder Revue tour, featuring many of the same musicians, most notably violinist Scarlet Rivera, whose playing defines the record's 'gypsy-folk' texture. The album is famous for its topical opener 'Hurricane,' which advocated for the release of boxer Rubin Carter, and the controversial 11-minute epic 'Joey.' It concludes with 'Sara,' one of Dylan's most overtly autobiographical songs, breaking the album's narrative artifice to address his crumbling marriage.
