Dig in Deep

Released in 2016, Dig in Deep is Bonnie Raitt's twentieth studio album and the second to be released on her independent label, Redwing Records. Following the massive success of Slipstream, this record finds Raitt further leaning into her role as a self-produced artist, resulting in a punchier, more guitar-forward sound. The album is notable for its rhythmic diversity, blending her foundational blues-rock with elements of funk, R&B, and even a touch of rockabilly on 'Shakin’ Shakin’ Shakes'. A central highlight is her cover of INXS's 'Need You Tonight', which she reimagines as a sultry, mid-tempo blues burner. The recording features her long-standing touring band, which contributes to the cohesive, intuitive interplay found throughout the tracks. Critically, it was lauded for maintaining her high standards of musicianship while showcasing a more aggressive, 'dug-in' guitar style than its predecessor. The album concludes with 'The Ones We Couldn’t Be', one of the most vulnerable piano ballads in her entire discography, highlighting her growth as a songwriter.
