DIM

Released in April 2021, DIM is a deeply personal EP by Brian Fennell, performing as SYML. The project was born from the trauma of his father's stage four pancreatic cancer diagnosis in 2019 and his subsequent passing during the global pandemic. Unlike his more folk-leaning earlier work, DIM leans into a 'dimmer' sonic palette, blending his classical piano background with cold, ambient electronic textures. The EP functions as a thematic cycle regarding 'anticipatory grief' - the act of mourning someone while they are still alive. Critically, it was noted for its emotional honesty and Fennell's technical vocal prowess, specifically his ability to maintain a powerful yet vulnerable falsetto. The 12-inch vinyl release features a unique etched B-side, emphasizing the EP's status as a singular, tactile piece of art rather than a mere collection of songs.
