Discouraged Ones

Released in 1998, Discouraged Ones represents the most significant turning point in Katatonia's career. Following the vocal cord issues of Jonas Renkse, the band abandoned harsh vocals entirely, a move that alienated some metal purists but ultimately defined the 'depressive rock' subgenre. Recorded at Sunlight Studio, the album's production is notably more lo-fi and 'boxy' than its predecessor, Brave Murder Day, contributing to a claustrophobic, urban atmosphere. The songwriting shifted toward shorter, more verse-chorus oriented structures while retaining the slow, mournful tempos of doom.
