Distance Over Time

Distance Over Time is Dream Theater's fourteenth studio album and represents a conscious 'return to roots' following the polarizing, symphonic-heavy The Astonishing. Recorded at Yonderbarn studios in upstate New York, the band lived together during the writing and recording process, a first in their recent history. This proximity resulted in a significantly faster writing cycle (18 days) and a 'tighter and focused' sound reminiscent of 2003's Train of Thought. It is their shortest album since 1992, notably featuring no tracks exceeding the ten-minute mark, which emphasizes groove and song structure over long-form suite composition. The album also marks a high point for bassist John Myung's audible presence in the mix, particularly on tracks like 'S2N'. Critically, it was seen as a vitalizing move that recaptured the band's heavy metal edge while maintaining their progressive pedigree.
