Distant Lights

Released shortly after his self-titled debut album in 2006, the Distant Lights EP solidified Burial's position as the premier architect of hauntological electronic music. The release features the seminal title track alongside 'Pirates' and 'Gutted', plus a rare remix by Hyperdub label boss Kode9. Recorded entirely in sound editing software without a traditional sequencer, the EP showcases Burial's signature technique of hand-placing audio clips to create a loose, human swing that departs from standard electronic music production. The tracks are built on a foundation of found sounds, including video game audio, film dialogue, and rain recordings, all saturated in simulated vinyl crackle. This release helped define the early aesthetic of UK dubstep, shifting it away from aggressive club bangers toward a deeply introspective, atmospheric art form.
