Do Make Say Think

Released in 1997 and later picked up by Constellation Records in 1999, Do Make Say Think's self-titled debut serves as a foundational text for the Toronto post-rock scene. Recorded primarily at the CIUT-FM radio studios and the Harris Institute for the Arts, the album is characterized by a raw, lo-fi aesthetic that distinguishes it from the more orchestral 'Godspeed You! Black Emperor' sound often associated with their label. The band's signature dual-drummer lineup (James Sanford and David Mitchell) is already fully formed here, providing a polyrhythmic complexity that leans heavily toward jazz fusion and dub. The track 'The Fare to Get There' stands as one of the longest in their discography, showcasing their early interest in long-form, improvisational structures. While later albums would embrace a warmer, more pastoral 'Canadian' sound, this debut remains their most experimental and urban-sounding work, heavily utilizing tape saturation and field recordings to create a dense, nocturnal atmosphere.
