Echolocations: River is the second installment in Andrew Bird’s ambitious site-specific series, following 2014’s Canyon. Recorded live while Bird stood in the Los Angeles River beneath the Glendale-Hyperion Bridge, the album is entirely instrumental and relies heavily on the natural acoustics of the location. Bird used a portable recording rig to capture the way his violin notes interacted with the massive concrete arches of the bridge, creating a natural reverb that digital plug-ins cannot replicate. The tracks are named after local flora and fauna, emphasizing the ecological focus of the project. Critically, the album was praised for its minimalist beauty and its ability to find art in urban decay. It stands as a significant departure from Bird's lyrical 'Whistling Gypsy' persona, positioning him instead as a sound artist and environmentalist.
