Ecstasy

Released in November 1987, Ecstasy is the second mini-album by My Bloody Valentine and serves as a critical bridge between their early garage-rock phase and the shoegaze revolution of 'Isn't Anything'. Recorded during the same sessions as the 'Strawberry Wine' single, the EP was plagued by financial constraints and technical errors during mastering. Specifically, a frequency error led to the percussion being mixed unusually high, a flaw the band was unable to correct before Lazy Records rushed the release. This record marks the debut of Bilinda Butcher, whose vocal presence fundamentally shifted the band's dynamic toward the ethereal. While the band would later dismiss the record due to its compromised production, critics view it as the moment they 'found their voice'. The songwriting leans heavily into jangle-pop and psych-pop, foreshadowing the 'glide guitar' technique that would soon define their career.
